Zecher leMachatzit HaShekel
זכר למחצית השקל
In the time of the Beit HaMikdash, the half-shekel was an annual contribution toward the communal offerings and sacred service. Since the Temple is no longer standing, the custom before Purim is to give charity zecher leMachatzit HaShekel—“in remembrance of the half-shekel”—commemorating that original mitzvah.
בזמן שבית המקדש היה קיים ניתנה מחצית השקל מדי שנה לצורך קרבנות הציבור ועבודת המקדש. כיום, כאשר בית המקדש אינו עומד על תלו, נוהגים לפני פורים לתת צדקה זכר למחצית השקל, לזכר המצווה המקורית.
